Honoring Juneteenth

Honoring Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a celebration of enormous signification and an opportunity for people in our community that is not Black to stop talking, absorb, and listen.

VIA Collective Inc strongly believes that diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to our mission and values. We strive to create an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued.

Yet, today we are reminded that Black Americans are still struggling, and we are accountable to them.

Juneteenth is a day to deeply consider the impact of racism on the hearts of every Black American, the racism that makes the news AND the micro-aggressions that are experienced daily.  It is a day to also celebrate the many contributions of Black Americans and to honor their fight in democracy for us all.

It is VIA Collective inc’s responsibility to create opportunities for Black voices to be heard, and to do what is in our power to advance equity.

Today we celebrate local Black women owned businesses that are working towards justice and liberation: A Better Glynn, NAACP Brunswick, Rise Risley, The Brunswick African-American Cultural Center.

Today is a day for us to learn, read, and study Black culture, a culture that should be taught, valued, honored, and shared as much as the White culture.

In support of these organizations and their work in liberation, we encourage you to donate to them.

Here are local events we can respectfully attend:

The 4th Annual Juneteenth Festival, Historic Selden Park, June 17th, 12-4pm

Sapelo Island Juneteenth, Sapelo Island Community Center, 10am-2pm

The 4th Annual Juneteenth Festival, Historic Selden Park, June 17th, 12-4pm

The 1st Annual Juneteenth Parade, starting at Lanier Blvd, ends at Mary Ross Park, June 19th, 10am

The 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom, Columbus Square, Darien, June 19th, 11:30am-till

If you know of any other organizations or event we have missed, please let us know, we will update this page and we will share.

Unlocking the Power of the Three-Second Rule for a Joyful Workplace

Unlocking the Power of the Three-Second Rule for a Joyful Workplace

Years ago, I went to a concert where the musician, Greg Alan Isakov, paired his folk guitar with the symphony orchestra. The music was compelling, but there was something else that moved me that I couldn’t figure out.

Days later it hit me—I enjoyed the music, but what I loved more, what really sang to me, was watching the artist doing what he loved and manifesting his potential in the world. That’s when my purpose crystallized for me. I live for human potential—it’s why I started schools, it’s why I support ambitious entrepreneurs, it’s why I parent the way I do and love the way I do and why I am.

If you had asked me before the concert, I would have told you that my purpose, my why, was making sure that everyone had opportunities to learn and grow. I would have shared stories about how many parents had come up to me saying that they feel like they have their child back after just a few weeks at the school, or how teachers told me every year after orientation that they feel like they finally have a home where they can do what they love and make a difference for their students. I would have shared all of those stories to make sense of it, because I didn’t yet have my purpose articulated in my own mind.

The Three-Second Rule

As early as the 1950s, psychologists were beginning to understand the challenges of making decisions when our brains could only access limited amounts of information at a time. In legendary studies that have now become ingrained in pop psychology lore, researchers uncovered that the number seven was a magical one for memory. It represented the number of items we could hold in memory at a time—numbers, letters, single-syllable words. This capacity of our brains to hold information that we can use in the moment to perform a task is called working memory.

As psychologists began to delve into the capabilities and nuances of working memory, they discovered that it isn’t just seven pieces of information that your brain can hold, it’s really seven chunks of information. For example, “courage” is one word, but two syllables and seven letters. When we are asked to remember the word “courage,” we don’t use up all of our working memory by thinking of the seven letters as discreet and unrelated bits of information. Instead, our minds chunk the letters together and store them as one. That’s why you can have peanut butter, coconut milk, coffee creamer, cat food, and paper clips all on your shopping list and manage to make it out of the store with everything, even if you didn’t write it down.

Working memory isn’t just for shopping lists, though. We use working memory almost every time we make a decision. One kind of working memory is echoic memory, which is just what it sounds like: an “echo” of things you’ve heard that stick in your mind. Echoic memory is really fascinating because it can be used to hack all kinds of behaviors and decisions. In business, researchers have found that pithy phrases that you can say in three seconds or less “stick” in a different way than shopping lists: echoic memory jumps in and echoes back these phrases when we make decisions.

Using the Three-Second Rule as a Leader

So what does this mean for work, for your business, for leading a rock star team? Sum up your why, or your business’s why, in a phrase that echoic memory can handle—one that takes three seconds or less to say out loud. At my last school, this was where no one waits to learn. Everyone knew they should make decisions with this “rule”—a teacher with a student moving faster or slower than others in the class can ask for support, because no one waits to learn. A student in third grade who needs algebra class—yes, because no one waits to learn. A student in third grade who needs extra help with reading because of dyslexia—yes, because no one waits. Parent education? Of course, every week, because no one waits to learn. And teachers’ professional development? Yes, always. Because no.one.waits.

I’m sure other three-second rules come to mind. Nike’s Just do it. Apple’s Think Different. Disney’s Happiest Place on Earth. As their “rules” rolled out, the employees of these companies knew what was expected of them, what culture and vision they were tasked with creating with their every interaction and decision.

A few tips on uncovering your organization’s why:

  • Ask people for stories about wins—why were they celebrated more than other achievements?
  • If something moves you or your team, ask why—what was it about that experience that was more emotional than other experiences?
  • Ask yourself and your team what the company stands for. What is its promise to customers? To employees?

Collect these stories, anecdotes, promises, experiences and see if there are any themes or categories that emerge. Use those themes as the basis for brainstorming your three-second rule. Spending some time distilling your why into a three-second rule empowers your team to own the culture and can give meaning and purpose to a workplace.

Be brave. Try it!

The Power of Friendship

The Power of Friendship

My life is blessed with a number of valuable treasures. I have a loving husband and son, a caring extended family, a home that is warm and inviting, and we live in a community founded on strong southern values. However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t also include amongst my greatest treasures my dear friends who share their journeys with me as we navigate  this thing called life.

There is a picture above the bed in our guest room that says, “Angels can’t be everywhere, that’s why God gave us Friends.”  Pictures of my friends and gifts I’ve received from them fill the room. I thank God everyday for my girlfriends and I know without a doubt that having these women in my life has shaped and defined the woman I am today. Experts share that the bond between women is directly related to our emotional, mental and physical wellness. Good friends equal good health! I believe this is true and it has been demonstrated throughout my life. My friends laughed with me, cried with me, listened to me, propped me up when I didn’t think I could stand, and loved me – sometimes in spite of myself – no matter how weird or crazy things are. For these women, I will be forever grateful.

Many say we are most influenced by the five people we spend the most time with. I think about the MANY friends I have had over the past 60+ years. Some of my friends were in my life for a short time, and others I have called “friends” for 45+ years.  Whether in my life for a short time or if they’re still hanging in there with me now, their presence has influenced me in too many ways to count, and probably in ways I can’t even identify yet. My friends help me to be brave, strong, insightful, and creative!

Life can be glorious and sometimes life is just really super tough. Having friends to celebrate with and/or commiserate with is a blessing we cannot take for granted. Our friends truly are our “angels on earth” and knowingly or unknowingly ensure the world is a better place!  When I was a Girl Scout, we sang a song that goes something like, “Make new friends but keep the old, the new are silver and the old are GOLD.”  That song is as true now as it was when I was in the 7th grade!

While attending the VIA Conference, hopefully you will take time to grow personally and professionally with your old friends, and make some new friends to stand beside you and with you on your own personal journey.

Enneagram, A Transformative Tool

Enneagram, A Transformative Tool

Are you self-aware? If you thought yes, research shows that there’s an 80% chance you could be wrong about that. But before you roll your eyes and click on that X, keep reading and see how you can become more self-aware!

  • Libby Cole

  • January 15, 2023

And why would you want to? Healthy self-awareness is the number one predictor of success. It leads to having more confidence, being more creative, being a better decision maker, having stronger relationships, more effective communication, being more likely to be promoted, more satisfied, the list goes on and on. Understanding your own internal motivations as well as getting a sneak peek into the “why” of those around you is not only interesting, it can be life changing. So what if there’s a tool that can help you achieve both self-awareness and interpersonal effectiveness?

The Enneagram of personality provides a robust picture of patterns of behavior by digging into an individual’s motivations, desires, and fears. It is not concerned with what someone does, but why. The model has nine personality types that are mapped on a diagram and has intentional connections between each type.

The Nine Types

Type 1: The Moral Reformer:
Rational, perfectionistic, conscientious, sensible, ethical
Driven by their need to be good and balanced and to have integrity.

Type 2: The Supportive Helper:
Caretaker, pleaser, advisor, selfless, loving, giving
Driven by their need to be loved and wanted, looking for appreciation through helping others.

Type 3: The Successful Achiever:
Communicator, role model, goal-oriented, driven, accomplished
Driven by their need to be admired and be acknowledged for their success.

Type 4: The Romantic Individualist:
Artistic, sensitive, creative, inspiring, dramatic
Driven by their need to be valued as special, unique, and authentic.

Type 5: The Observing Investigator:
Innovator, thinker, wise, visionary, knowledgeable
Driven by their need to be competent and proficient, seen as knowledgeable.

Type 6: The Questioning Loyalist:
Guardian, courageous, loyal, effective, committed
Driven by their need to have security and support, desire for stability in their life.

Type 7: The Entertaining Enthusiast:
Adventurer, energizer, fun-loving, positive, affirming
Driven by their need to be free and happy, seeking freedom and independence.

Type 8: The Protective Challenger:
Leader, strong, able, decisive, determined, committed
Driven by their need to have autonomy and protect others from injustice.

Type 9: The Mediating Peacemaker:
Comforter, optimist, loving, down-to-earth, modest, trusting
Driven by the desire to have peacefulness and connection.
Where do I start?

There are many tests out there and they can be a good starting point. Try www.expandcandc.com/take- the-test to get your first glimpse. The tests can help you start to dip your toes into the water but they are not necessarily the answer. The best way to decide your core type is to learn about each of the nine types, then decide for yourself which one you relate to the most. Remembering that it is all about why you do what you do, not how you show up or how others perceive you. Think about your motivations, not your behaviors.

After figuring out your type, there is so much more depth to discover about this tool. You can dig into communication, conflict, growth tips, stress management, coping styles, defense mechanisms, childhood patterns, and more. Start to connect this with the people in your life and you can even begin to heal relationships or simply make them deeper and more effective.
